NYSE Arca evolved out of the 2006 merger of Archipelago Holdings and the NYSE. The exchanges merged to form a new holding company known as NYSE Group. The new publicly traded, for-profit company combined the traditional open-outcry model of NYSE with Archipelago's global electronic access system. In 2005, Archipelago Holdings acquired PCX Holdings Inc., the parent of the Pacific Stock Exchange (PCX).
