Direct Edge, a Jersey City, New Jersey-based stock exchange, trades all U.S. listed equities including Tape A (NYSE listed), Tape B (Arca/Amex listed) and Tape C (NASDAQ listed) stocks.

Direct Edge originated as an ECN under the name Attain in 1998. In 2008, Direct Edge took operational control of the International Securities Stock Exchange and ran three trading platforms (EDGA ECN, EDGX ECN, and ISE SX) side by side until the ISE Stock Exchange was decommissioned after EDGA and EDGX became stock exchanges in their own right.

In 2010, Direct Edge received approval from the SEC to begin operating its ECN platforms, EDGA and EDGX, as two newly established, functioning, national stock exchanges.
